21/6/05: Launched in response to mayday call from yacht Siesta with man overboard, position believed near Long Sand. Thames CG had no communication with the vessel after initial call, but Dover CG managed to establish some communication with casualty. Position was eventually established as being on Long Sand near Foulger Gat. Harwich lifeboat and Rescue Helicopter 125 also tasked. Helicopter arrived on scene and evacuated injured man in critical condition from yacht to Margate Hospital. Walton Lifeboat arrived on scene, got alongside yacht and towed her clear of the sands. It was only with arrival of lifeboat that the true situation became clear. The yacht had been on passage from Spain to Ipswich with a delivery crew aboard consisting of father and son from Scotland and a Norweigian. The yacht had grounded on the Long Sand and the father had gone over the side attached to a rope to attempt to find deep water and also to try and push the yacht off the sand into deeper water close by. At some stage it appears that the yacht’s engine was accidentally put into gear, dragging the man attached to the rope under the yacht and into the propeller. The Norweigian crew member went over the side with a knife and cut the man free. He was then dragged aboard the yacht with serious injuries. With the tow back to Harwich likely to take several hours the coxswain became concerned for the two men who were in deep shock, especially the son of the injured man. He therefore requested that Harwich lifeboat take off the two men in order to get them ashore as quick as possible. This was done and the men were landed at Harwich lifeboat station into the care of the police and ambulance personal. Walton lifeboat continued with the tow to Harwich berthing the yacht at the lifeboat station. The injured man died of his injuries shortly after arrival at Margate Hospital.

Customs RIB was used to connect towline and yacht was successfully towed clear of sands. The yacht’s propeller had been fouled by rigging and was therefore towed to Titchmarsh Marina. |

Holland from Burnham followed the lifeboat into the marina. Two of the
crew of the Opkikker had sustained injuries and they were checked

1/6/05: A full scale search was launched after Thames Coastguard received
notification from Essex Police that they had received a 999 mobile phone
call about 03:30 from a vessel sinking off the Essex coast. Information
from mobile phone masts at Frinton and Holland Haven suggested the vessel
to be 3 to 4 miles offshore. Clacton Atlantic and Rescue Helicopter 125
were also tasked. Walton Lifeboat was asked to search from Medusa Buoy to
Wallet Spitway with Clacton Lifeboat searching close inshore. About 04:55
Walton fishing vessel True to the Core reported spotting a small
inflatable dinghy with two people, a father and son aged 17, on board
close to the Long Sand Head. They were taken on board the fishing vessel
and put in the wheelhouse to warm up, as they were lightly clad and the
son was showing early signs of hypothermia. They were airlifted off by
helicopter after confirming that they had made the 999 call and taken to
Colchester Hospital, being discharged later in the morning. Walton
Lifeboat made for the vessel a 55ft homemade motor cruiser called
Persistent Whisper, which was still afloat. Lifeboat salvage pump put
aboard vessel in attempt to clear casualty of water taken on board after
sustaining damage through going aground on Long Sand. However it was clear
that the vessel was too badly damaged to be saved and the lifeboat towed
her out of the main shipping channel and on to the Long Sand where the
vessel eventually sank. The vessel had left Maylandsea on the Blackwater
the previous evening and had gone aground on the Long Sand en route to
South Wales, the vessel being holed by pounding on the flood tide. Launch: 04:20 RFS: 08:56 Wind: SE 4 Sea: moderate

The Beata had been in company with another yacht, which expressed concern to Dover Coastguard on arrival at Ramsgate. Several merchant vessels reported a yacht stationary or going round in circles near the Black Deep 7 buoy. Walton lifeboat launched to investigate with Margate lifeboat also launching. Walton lifeboat located the yacht in question and confirmed that it was not the Beata. This yacht reported that it had been in the vicinity of the Black Deep and had been waiting for enough water to cross the Sunk sand into the Barrow Deep. An expanded search area for Walton lifeboat was worked out but shortly afterwards the Beata was discovered aground near Margate, the person on board having got ashore safely.
